General Questions
What is ClearRoute UK and what does it do?
ClearRoute UK is a UK documentation consultancy that helps international clients navigate official UK documentation processes — including driving licence conversion, NI number applications, BRP and eVisa guidance, theory and practical test booking, address proof setup, and UK bank account guidance. We provide expert, end-to-end support through official UK government channels only.
Is ClearRoute UK affiliated with the UK government?
No. ClearRoute UK is an independent consultancy. We are not affiliated with the DVLA, DVSA, HMRC, Home Office, or any other UK government body. We provide guidance and preparation support — all applications are submitted directly through the official government channels on behalf of or alongside the client.
What makes ClearRoute UK different from other services?
We operate with a deliberately small, focused team and a manageable caseload — which means every client receives personal, dedicated attention rather than being processed through a large agency. We combine genuine hands-on experience with these processes with complete transparency on fees, timelines, and what to expect. We also work exclusively through official channels — no shortcuts, no grey areas.
Do I need to be based in the UK to use ClearRoute UK?
Most of our services are designed for clients who are already in the UK or in the process of relocating. However, we can provide initial guidance and begin document preparation for clients who are preparing to arrive. Contact us to discuss your specific situation.
How do I get started?
Simply contact us using the form on our contact page, send us an email, or message us on WhatsApp. Tell us your situation and what you need — we'll get back to you within 24 hours on business days and arrange a free consultation to assess your case and recommend the right service.
Driving Licence Conversion
Can any foreign driving licence be converted to a UK licence?
Not all foreign licences qualify for a direct exchange. Licences from "designated countries" can be exchanged without a test. Others require the UK theory and practical tests to be passed first. The requirements also depend on the vehicle categories on your licence. We confirm your eligibility during the free consultation.
How long can I drive in the UK on my foreign licence?
If you've become a UK resident, you can generally drive on your foreign licence for up to 12 months from the date you became a resident. After that, you must have a UK licence. We strongly recommend beginning the conversion process well within this window to avoid driving without a valid licence.
What is a "designated country" for driving licence exchange?
Designated countries are nations whose driving licences the UK DVLA accepts for direct exchange without a test. The list includes countries such as Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, and many others. EU/EEA licences also have specific exchange rules. We'll confirm whether your country qualifies during the consultation.
What happens to my foreign licence during the conversion process?
For most direct exchanges, you must surrender your foreign licence to the DVLA as part of the application. The DVLA typically returns it to the issuing country. This is a standard part of the process — we'll explain exactly what happens to your licence before you submit anything.
How long does the conversion process take?
Once submitted, DVLA typically processes driving licence exchanges within 4–8 weeks, though this can vary. Medical form requirements or additional checks can extend the timeline. We monitor your application throughout and follow up if there are delays.
Theory & Practical Tests
Do I need to pass my theory test before booking a practical test?
Yes — you must hold a valid theory test pass certificate before you can book a DVSA practical driving test. Your theory pass is valid for 2 years. If it expires before you pass your practical test, you'll need to retake the theory test.
What does the UK theory test involve?
The theory test has two parts: 50 multiple choice questions (pass mark: 43/50) and a hazard perception test with 14 video clips (pass mark: 44/75). Both must be passed in the same sitting at a DVSA test centre. We provide study materials covering both sections as part of our Theory Test Booking service.
How long does it take to get a practical test slot?
Waiting times vary significantly by location and time of year. In busy urban areas, slots can be 6–10 weeks away. In quieter areas, slots are often available within 2–3 weeks. We actively monitor availability and alert you to cancellation slots to help you get tested sooner.
What does the practical driving test assess?
The DVSA practical test lasts approximately 40 minutes and assesses your ability to drive safely and independently. It includes: an eyesight check, a vehicle safety question, general driving ability on real roads (including independent driving), and one or two set manoeuvres. We provide a full test day briefing as part of our Practical Test Booking service.
NI Number Applications
What is a National Insurance (NI) number and why do I need one?
A National Insurance number is a unique personal reference number used by the UK government to track your National Insurance contributions and tax records. You need one to work legally in the UK, claim benefits, and access many government services. Your employer will need it for payroll, though you can start working while your application is being processed.
Who is eligible to apply for a UK NI number?
You can apply if you have the right to work or live in the UK. This includes UK citizens, EU/EEA nationals with settled or pre-settled status, and non-EEA nationals with an appropriate visa or leave to remain. We confirm your eligibility during the free consultation.
Can I start work before my NI number arrives?
Yes — you can start working while your NI number application is in progress. Inform your employer that you've applied and provide your NI number once it arrives. Your employer can still operate PAYE without it in the interim.
How long does it take to receive a NI number?
HMRC typically issues NI numbers within 2–4 weeks of a correctly submitted application. Processing times can vary — especially during busy periods. If there are any delays or requests for additional information, we follow up with HMRC on your behalf.
BRP & eVisa
What is a BRP and do I still need one?
A Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) is a physical card that was issued to non-EEA nationals as proof of their right to live, work, or study in the UK. Since 2024, the UK Home Office has been transitioning from physical BRP cards to eVisas — a digital immigration status. If you currently hold a BRP, you should also set up your UKVI online account to access your eVisa.
What is an eVisa and how do I access it?
An eVisa is your digital UK immigration status — stored online and accessed through a UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) account. You need a UKVI account to view and share your right to work or rent in the UK. We help you set up your account and resolve any access issues as part of our BRP / eVisa Guidance service.
My BRP card has expired — what should I do?
It depends on whether your leave to remain (your visa/permission to stay) has also expired. If your leave is still valid but your BRP card has expired, you may need a replacement card. If your leave is also expiring, you'll need to apply for a visa extension. Contact us and we'll assess your situation and guide you through the correct steps.
Banking & Address Proof
Why is proof of address so difficult to obtain as a new arrival?
This is one of the most common frustrations for new UK arrivals — you need a bank account to get address documents, but you need address documents to open a bank account. We help break this cycle by identifying the fastest legitimate route to accepted UK address documentation for your specific situation.
Which documents are accepted as proof of address in the UK?
Commonly accepted documents include: UK bank statements (dated within 3 months), utility bills (gas, electricity, water — within 3 months), council tax bills (current year), HMRC correspondence, current tenancy agreements, and TV Licence confirmation letters. Exact acceptance varies by institution. We advise on what's needed for your specific application.
Can I open a UK bank account without an existing credit history?
Yes — a basic bank account or challenger bank account (like Monzo or Starling) doesn't require a UK credit history. These are often the best starting point for new arrivals. Once you've built some UK financial history, upgrading to a full current account becomes straightforward.
Fees & Our Process
How much do ClearRoute UK's services cost?
Our consultancy fees are discussed and agreed with you directly before any work begins — we don't publish fixed prices because every case is different. The complexity, timeline, and specific requirements of your situation all affect the fee. Contact us for a free consultation and we'll provide a clear, transparent quote before you commit to anything.
Are government fees included in ClearRoute UK's fee?
No — government fees (e.g. DVLA application fees, DVSA test fees) are paid directly to the relevant government body by the client. They are always separate from our consultancy fee and are outlined clearly upfront so there are no surprises.
Is there a deposit required?
Our payment structure — including any deposit requirements — is discussed and agreed during the consultation before work begins. All payment terms are clearly communicated and documented before we proceed with any application.
What happens if my application is unsuccessful?
Our process is designed to minimise the risk of unsuccessful applications through thorough preparation and document review before submission. In the rare event of an unsuccessful outcome, we assess the reason and advise on the best course of action — whether that's requesting a review, reapplying, or taking an alternative route. We remain alongside you at every step.
How do I contact ClearRoute UK?
You can reach us via our contact form, by email at info@clearoute.uk, or by WhatsApp. We respond within 24 hours on business days — and usually much sooner via WhatsApp.
